Sea-Girt Villages of Italy Photography Adventure with Harold Davis in October 2015

If you enjoy photography and travel, please consider joining me in October of 2015 for a photographic adventure to Italy. Click here for the complete Prospectus and Itinerary.

This once in a lifetime trip focuses on some particularly photogenic areas of Italy, and gives us time to get to know these special places so we can come home with incredibly unique imagery. We will photograph and get to know some very special places including Cinque Terre, Naples, the island of Capri, and Positano and the Amalfi Coast.

These are wonderful and special areas with their own charms. They embody the Italian culture and the picturesque nature of sea-girt villages clinging to the sides of mountains facing the ocean. The pacing of this trip allows us time to explore and photograph. We will focus on four major locations, viewing them in depth. Our small group size will allow me to give you individual attention as you photograph.

I believe that where one stays is extremely important in travel photography. The hotels on this journey (4-star where available) have been personally hand-selected for quality, location, and photogenic charm.

The pacing of this over-two-week trip allows for variety, but we won’t be moving every night. That way, we can really get to know lovely areas such as Cinque Terre on the Ligurian Sea, and Positano on the Amalfi coast. The Photographic Adventure starts in Florence and ends in Naples, so those folks with additional time can add optional excursions to other Italian destinations either before or after this trip.

I’ve worked hard to keep the price reasonable on this trip. It is $6,495 for two full weeks (single supplement additional), with hotels, many extras, and (of course) photography!

You can view the complete itinerary by clicking here. Here are the five villages of Cinque Terre:

Dates: Sunday October 28, 2015 (leave United States October 27) – November 11, 2015 (15 days and 14 nights).

Cost: $6,495.00 per person (excluding airfare, single supplement $925.00 additional). Includes all accommodations, many meals, transportation and extras per the Itinerary and Inclusions. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and requires a $500 deposit and an application form.

Stairway to Heaven

On a rainy spring day I was photographing under the bridges in Paris, trying to keep my camera dry. The bridge shown in this image is the Pont Solferino, a pedestrian bridge over the Seine. My position is with the Tuilleries at my back, looking across the river at the Musee D’Orsay on the left.

Pont Solferino (Black & White) © Harold Davis

Pont Solferino (Black & White) © Harold Davis

The image shown here in black and white (above) and color (below) is composed from a bracketed sequence of five shots at exposures from 6 seconds to 1/60 of a second. I used my 15mm f/2.8 Zeiss lens, with a little post-production work to correct the perspective distortion. The HDR blending caused the people climbing the stairs to “ghost”—an effect that adds to what one person viewing my images has called a “stairway to heaven.”

: Making Memorable Travel Photos (the cost is only $29.95, and includes unlimited access to the post-session recording)

Many of us like to travel, and when we travel we bring our cameras. But there’s a strange paradox: no matter how unique and photogenic our destinations, mostly the photos we come back with are pretty dull. Your travel photos do not have to be boring!

In this presentation, noted photographer and digital artist Harold Davis shares his spectacular imagery from many places around the world as well as “abroad at home.” He’ll share the backstories about how many of his images were made, and what was going on at the time of the exposure. Hint: If men in military uniforms come toward you pointing automatic weapons, stop photographing whatever it is that you are photographing, and turn around slowly!

While showing his award-winning imagery, and sharing his travel photography stories, Harold will explain topics including:

The Making Memorable Travel Photos webinar covers:

  • How to research and prepare for any travel destination
  • Planning tools that Harold uses to maximize his chances of photographic success
  • Figuring out where the light is coming from to get the best photos
  • How to be “at home abroad” no matter what your destination
  • Making travel photos that rise above the mundane
  • Photographing people when you travel
  • How to ask a stranger permission to take their photo
  • Making travel photos with a personal viewpoint
  • How to get good shots when you are with a group
  • Editing and presenting your photos when you get home
  • The presentation will conclude with ample time for Q&A.

Want to move your photographic imagery from the mundane to the artistic? Then maybe this webinar—is for you! Learn to find the special at home and abroad in this extraordinary presentation from Harold Davis, one of the living masters of digital photography.

What one participant in past webinars has said: “Watching Harold work on his imagery, as he would in ‘real-life’, has helped me lock-in techniques that I had read about, but were only theoretical to me. It’s great to have multiple delivery channels for Harold’s information, and I now feel confident I can succeed.”

Each live webinar session has ample time for questions and is limited to twenty participants, so seating is very limited. The $29.95 fee includes unlimited access to the recording of the session.

Dance of the Seven Veils

When Salome danced for King Herod, there’s some controversy about the number of veils she used in her dance. But there is no controversy in these images: I created them with one beautiful woman and one piece of white fabric and in-camera multiple exposures on a black background. The composition was not changed in Photoshop, although I did routine cropping and processing, and added a texture.

Nachi-san

Japan, as someone put it to me, is the most exotic place one can go that is absolutely safe. Nachi-san, shown in this image, is one of the ends of the Kumano kodo pilgrimage trail. It is a religious Shangri-la above the ocean with an impressive waterfall behind the temple complex.

Nachi-san © Harold Davis

Nachi-san © Harold Davis

In my initial story on this image, I noted that “while some pilgrims do it the hard way and walk the ancient stones of the Kumano kodo up to mountain passes and down through valleys to arrive in Nachi-san, most visitors arrive by scheduled bus, or by tour bus. Like Lourdes in France, or Mt Koya in Japan, Nachi-san is a destination for religious tourists, almost all of whom are Japanese.” There’s more about the location in the story about my long exposure photo of the Pagoda at Nachi San.

When I first processed the image I straightened the lines of perspective, but my mistake left a little of the amrgin in the finished image. The version shown here fixes my earlier mistake.

Please consider joining me in the spring for a photographic trip to Japan, which includes a visit to Nachi-san.

The Creative Portfolio Weekend Workshop

Harold signing prints

Harold signing prints

What: Creating a unified body of work, such as a portfolio, is an important step towards attaining one’s goals as a photographer. This workshop will consider finding appropriate subject matter, editing one’s work, and the mechanics of creating both online and physical portfolios. Time will also be spent enhancing creativity through guided photographic and design exercises.

Who should attend: When one reaches a certain point as a photographer, it becomes clear that one needs to put together portfolios of one’s work. But the skills that have taken one this far with solitary imagery don’t necessarily extend to the creation of portfolios of work. If you would like as an amateur or professional photographer to learn to build better portfolios of your work, The Creative Portfolio Workshop is for you.

Admission is by approval of the instructor and/or portfolio review. Preference will be given to prior Harold Davis workshop attendees. Please drop us an email to see if this workshop is appropriate for you.

Where: Classroom conveniently located in Berkeley, California

When: Weekend workshop; May 9-10, 2015

Tuition and registration: ($695; early-bird special $645 for registration prior to Oct 15, 2014); click www.meetup.com/Harold-Davis/events/207505762/ to register for this workshop.

Workshop size: Minimum of 4 and maximum of 12 participants.

Falling

Falling is a single, in-camera multiple exposure using the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 and a Nikon D800 on a tripod. There was a black backdrop, and I used a studio strobe on either side, facing the model who was posing on a suspended hoop. The mechanics of in-camera multiple-exposure photography aren’t too tough to master provided auto-gain is enabled. But creating these images does require precision choreography and communication with the model to get the posing positions right, otherwise the composition doesn’t come together.

He’ll show some of his images in the context of why he chooses to render them in black and white, then move on to the specifics of his unique and poswerful techniques for creating rich monochromatic images with extraordinary depth using Photoshop adjustments, Nik Silver Efex Pro and a workflow the takes advantage of the power inherent in Photoshop layers and masking!

Painterly Peony Panos

I shot this image of peonies on a light box in two panels, which were later stitched together in post-production to make a peony panorama. Each panel was photographed with a Nikon D800 and the Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 on a tripod. There were eight exposures in each panel, with the aperture at f/11 and ISO set to 100. Shutter speeds on each ranged from 1/40 of a second to 2.5 seconds. With the two panels stitched together, then cropped for composition, the resulting file is  quite large, 10,321 pixels by 4,712 pixels at 300ppi. This means I can make a 34″ wide print with no enlargement of the file, and it would be easy with no sweat to enlarge this two or three times with no noticeable loss of quality.
