Part 2, A New Era for Black and White

Harold Davis: “We came to the end of an era, pretty much, with film photography, and in fact, there was a time when the only photography anyone could do was black and white. Then, color film photography became the ascendant thing. And now we have an entirely new art form with a lot of new craft involved, and the idea behind the technical parts of this book, and it’s not that I’m going to tell everybody exactly what slider to press, with what software, but more the principles and ideas of how digital black and white photography work.”

  1. I have listened to that podcast several times already. The interviewer has done a very good job asking questions that gave Mr. Davis the opportunity to elaborate on what this book is about. That this book is four books in one – a technical guidebook, a travel narrative, a book to show the photographs and one about how to see, how to look at images and on how to become a better photographer. I especially liked when he talked about images as a narrative. This and so much more things that are in this podcast (and of course the book) will keep me thinking for a very long time. And what more can you ask for in a book? And a podcast for that matter.
