Fetish
Technically speaking, a fetish is defined as "an inanimate object worshiped for its supposed magical powers or because it is considered to be inhabited by a spirit." I photographed the…

Eglise Sainte Jean
The doors to the church in Najac, France are closed tight---which helps lead to the visual sense that one never really knows what goes on behind closed doors. The entrance…

Opera Garnier Stairs
It was fun to photograph again today in the crazily ornate Opera Garnier. This one is nine exposures using a fisheye lens. Since no tripods are allowed, I very carefully…

Lot River Valley
Today we walked to the small town of Calvignac, France perched on a rocky crag, and about 3 kilometers from the Mas de Garrigue. The weather threatened rain, and was…

Metamorphosis
A metamorphosis is a transformation. In this image, a model, also shown in Nude Descending a Ladder, is transforming into a portion of Multnomah Falls (or vice versa, the waterfall…

Yaquina Bay Bridge
In the fog, the Yaquina Bay Bridge seemed to stretch on forever. The ending was obscure, and vanishingly difficult to find.

From Darkness into Light
Photography is famously about "writing with light"---or rendering light. In fact, light is integral to photography. You can't photograph a physical object. You can only capture the light reflected or…

Changing Focal Lengths in a Multiple Exposure
Over more than a year, I've been working on a series of in-camera multiple exposure images using models in a studio and strobes. Generally, my approach has been to make…

Patterns in Fishnet
The quest for an interesting photographic image is in large part the need to find order in an inherently chaotic universe. Even if that quest ends up showing disorder, it…

Piazza San Marco at Night
One reason to photograph at night in a tourist destination is, as I explained in Photographing the Bridge of Sighs at Night, to avoid selfie-stick-toting tour groups. Another reason is…

And now for something completely different…
This is an in-camera double exposure I made on Saturday. The model is Anastasia Arteyeva. Related images: View more of my Multiple Exposures (slide show).

Lost City in Sorrento
Adjacent to the center of picturesque Sorrento, Italy two chasms meet. Long ago, rivers in these gorges flowed cleanly down to the ocean, and were the original settlement in the…

Hieroglyphic or La Dolce Vita
Sunbathing on the boat ramp in Riomaggiore harbor could be La Dolce Vita---the sweet life, and the name of a 1960 Fellini film. Except that the angle of repose causes…
